We urge Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to re-evaluate the way food and water is being distributed in Haiti. As these pictures show, armed men are often seizing the large packages of supplies being dropped by helicopter or being distributed from centralized distribution centers, and many helpless victims are being further victimized. It would be far better to drop individual MREs, bottled water, and med kits from helicopters so that more people benefit from this aid. Until order is restored, centralized distribution will not be an effective means of distributing supplies.
Pierre Leroy, of the Haitian People’s Support Project suggests that the UN and US authorities hire these armed men and put them to good use; we’re not sure if we agree, but Pierre is a Haitian, and is probably better able to judge the situation than we are.
We pray that the situation in Haiti improves soon. Many lives have been lost, and an improved approach to providing aid to the Haitian people is necessary. Madame Secretary Clinton; we beg you to re-evaluate the circumstances, and to act accordingly.
