GAS DRILLING BULLETIN

DRILLING ISN’T SAFE — and it’s Time to Act

For two years the Catskill Mountainkeeper has been participating in good faith in the process of determining whether it’s possible to create rigorous regulations under which gas drilling can safely proceed in New York State.  We have offered scientific information, written comments and testimony at every turn. We have been playing by the rules that the DEC set up, believing until now that they are looking for the best solution for the state and will act responsibly when shown important fact based information.

LOOK WHERE WE HAVE GOTTEN TO!

  • Despite all our efforts, a Draft report was released on September 30, 2009 that does NOT include the common sense regulations that we and many others have asked for. (Click here for more details)

  • Unless something dramatic happens it will be business as usual. The DEC will complete the public hearings, the comment preriod will expire and the DEC will issue a final report sometime next year that looks a lot like the draft.

  • The net result, barring legal action by us which is a definite likelihood, will be the commencement of drilling and devastating consequences for our water, our land, our health and our communities.

That leads to only one conclusion:
drilling isn't safe button

THE NY CITY WATERSHED ISN’T SAFE

Cheasapeake Energy has announced that they have no intention to drill in the New York City Watershed.  Until there is an agreement with Chesapeake that has legal teeth or until the DEC protects the New York City Watershed by regulation, it is still at risk. Don’t be confused by clever PR efforts created to mislead you.

THE NY CITY WATERSHED IS ONLY PART OF THE STORY

  • Protecting the City’s watershed is an important goal – but it is far from the only critical outcome we demand.

  • The Delaware River Watershed which delivers water to Philadelphia, Trenton, Camden and much of the Catskills is equally important.

  • The water from the Catskill’s aquifers which support agriculture and food production for New York City and our area are equally important.

  • The Catskill Park, one of the Northeast’s only true wilderness areas within a hundred miles of a major city is equally important.

  • This isn’t just about the Catskills – it is also about the whole Southern Tier of New York

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE IF YOU ACT NOW, ATTEND PUBLIC MEETINGS & SPEAK OUT!

  • Five important public hearings are coming up over the next two week.

  • This is your opportunity to tell the DEC what you think hydrofracking will do to New York City and the Catskills.

  • The DEC doesn’t know how you feel until YOU tell them.

  • Until they feel the power of public opinion they will continue down the dangerous path described above.

  • So it is critical that we attend these meetings in numbers.

  • At each meeting doors open at 6:00 PM and testimony will start at 7:00 PM.

  • Three of these meetings are being run by the DEC. Meetings in Oneonta and Ithaca are being held by other organizations who want citizens in their areas to be able to speak out without traveling many hours.

RALLY TO “KILL THE DRILL” NEXT TUESDAY AT STUYVESANT H.S.

  • Prior to the hearing in New York City on November 10th at Stuyvesant High School, there will be a rally outside sponsored by the Manhattan Borough President, Scott Stringer, starting at 5:00 PM.

  • Mountainkeeper’s Wes Gillingham and other officials and concerned citizens will speak.

  • Make sure the DEC gets the message – be there – numbers will count.
